Men had a much better life in Ancient Greece than women because only men could be full citizens.Men were the only one's considered to make the important decisions. Normally, only men fought in armies, took part in sports and met in public.

Spartan women were taught reading and writing and skills to protect themselves in battle. They were taught this at an early age. They had more freedom than women and girls that were living in Athens. they did this all as well as looking after the house, making clothes

In the poorest homes, women were expected to do all the duties by herself. Most homes had female slaves who cooked, cleaned and collected fresh water for the house owners every day!
There were also male slaves. Their responsibilities included protecting the home and tutoring male children.They did not tutor the female children.

Men and women lived in different parts of the house. Women had the back and upstairs part. Most houses in Ancient Greek towns were built from stone or clay. The roofs of these houses were covered with tiles or reeds.The houses had one or two storeys in height. The floors of the rooms were tiled to keep the rooms cool, although, in winter fires in metal baskets were sometimes used to warm up some of the rooms because it was so cooled in greece. Larger homes, owned by the richer people, had a kitchen, a room for bathing, a men's dining room, and most of the time a woman's sitting area. The houses were planned out around a courtyard, and had very high walls to protect and a strong gate. Most of ancient Greek families lives were centered around a courtyard.

Clothing and fashions . . . . . . .
Men and women wore a tunic which is a piece of clothing called a chiton. Women wore the long tunics and when it was cold they wore cloaks that had jewelry fastened onto it. Women always had their hair in fancy hairstyles. Rich women even put priceless jewels in their hair! Some of the women used chalk dust for powder and berry juice for lipstick.

Family life was very important to all of the greeks. Girls married when they were about 15 but men married after 30. Marriges were not made by the couple but by the family. Men had more freedom than women. they spent most of their time hunting, outdoors

The ancient Greeks ate a type of bread called Maza. Some sides that were served with this were Olives, figs and goat's milk cheese. Meat and fish were only served on special occasions. Rich people who had slaves made them cook and serve their meals for them in an open fire or a pottery oven.
